How to Use the Standard Deviation Calculator
How to find the standard deviation
- Enter your numbers in the box, separated by commas, spaces or new lines. You can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet.
- Choose sample or population. Use Sample if the numbers are a subset of a bigger group, and Population if they are the whole group.
- Read the result. The standard deviation is shown first, followed by the variance, the mean, the standard error and the coefficient of variation.
- Check the working. The table lists each value, its deviation from the mean and the squared deviation, so you can follow every step.
A small standard deviation means the values are bunched close to the mean. A large one means they are spread out. The result is in the same units as your data.
Formula & Methodology
Standard deviation formulas
Standard deviation measures how far the values in a data set typically sit from their mean.
Population: σ = √( Σ(x − μ)² ÷ N )
Sample: s = √( Σ(x − x̄)² ÷ (n − 1) )
- x = each value, μ or x̄ = the mean, N or n = the number of values
- Σ(x − mean)² = the sum of the squared deviations
- The variance is the same expression without the square root (σ² or s²)
Step by step
- Find the mean by adding the values and dividing by how many there are.
- Subtract the mean from every value to get its deviation.
- Square each deviation.
- Add the squared deviations.
- Divide by N (population) or n − 1 (sample). This is the variance.
- Take the square root. This is the standard deviation.
Worked example
Data: 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9
- Mean = 40 ÷ 8 = 5
- Deviations: −3, −1, −1, −1, 0, 0, 2, 4
- Squared: 9, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 4, 16, which add up to 32
- Population variance = 32 ÷ 8 = 4, so σ = 2
- Sample variance = 32 ÷ 7 = 4.571, so s = 2.138
Sample or population?
| Use | When | |---|---| | Population (÷ N) | Your numbers are every member of the group, such as the test scores of all 30 students in one class | | Sample (÷ n − 1) | Your numbers are a subset used to estimate a larger group, such as 30 people surveyed out of a city |
Dividing by n − 1 (Bessel's correction) makes the sample variance an unbiased estimate of the population variance. If you are not sure, a sample is the usual choice.
Related measures
- Standard error of the mean: s ÷ √n. It shows how precisely the sample mean estimates the true mean.
- Coefficient of variation: standard deviation ÷ mean × 100. It compares spread between data sets with different units or sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate standard deviation?
Find the mean, subtract it from each value, square the differences, add them up, divide by n − 1 (sample) or N (population), and take the square root. For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 the sum of squared deviations is 32, so the population standard deviation is √(32 ÷ 8) = 2.
What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?
The population version divides by N and is used when you have every value in the group. The sample version divides by n − 1 and is used when your data is a subset. For the same data the sample figure is always a little larger, which corrects for the fact that a sample tends to underestimate the spread.
What does standard deviation tell you?
It tells you how spread out the data is around the mean, in the same units as the data. For a bell-shaped distribution, about 68% of values lie within one standard deviation of the mean, about 95% within two, and about 99.7% within three.
What is the difference between variance and standard deviation?
Variance is the average of the squared deviations, and standard deviation is its square root. Standard deviation is easier to interpret because it is in the same units as your data, while variance is in squared units.
Can the standard deviation be negative or zero?
It can never be negative. It is zero only when every value is identical, because then no value differs from the mean. Any variation at all makes it positive.
What is a good or normal standard deviation?
There is no universal good value, because it depends on the scale of your data. To compare spread across data sets with different units or averages, use the coefficient of variation (standard deviation divided by the mean), which is shown as a percentage.
How many numbers do I need?
A population standard deviation works with one value, though it will be 0. A sample standard deviation needs at least two values. Larger samples give more reliable estimates, and the standard error shows how much the sample mean is likely to vary.
