How to Use the Mean, Median and Mode Calculator
How to find the mean, median and mode
- Type or paste your numbers. Separate them with commas, spaces or new lines. You can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet.
- Read the results. The mean, median, mode and range appear as you type, along with the count, sum, smallest and largest values.
- Check the spread. The standard deviation shows how far values typically sit from the mean. Use the sample version if your numbers are only part of a bigger group.
Decimals and negative numbers work too. If a value cannot be read as a number, the calculator points to it so you can fix it.
Formula & Methodology
The three averages
Mean = Sum of all values ÷ Number of values
Median = the middle value when the numbers are sorted. With an even count, it is the average of the two middle values.
Mode = the value that appears most often. A list can have one mode, several modes, or none.
Worked example
For the numbers 12, 15, 15, 18, 22, 25:
- Sum: 12 + 15 + 15 + 18 + 22 + 25 = 107
- Mean: 107 ÷ 6 = 17.83
- Median: the sorted list has two middle values, 15 and 18, so the median is (15 + 18) ÷ 2 = 16.5
- Mode: 15 appears twice and every other value once, so the mode is 15
- Range: largest minus smallest = 25 − 12 = 13
Standard deviation
Standard deviation measures how spread out the numbers are.
- Population: √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ n), used when your list is the entire group.
- Sample: √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1)), used when your list is a sample taken from a larger group.
Which average should I use?
The mean uses every value, but one extreme number can pull it up or down. The median is not affected by extreme values, which makes it better for things like house prices or incomes. The mode is the only average that works for categories such as the most popular shoe size.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you find the mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle number after sorting. The mode is the number that appears most often. For 12, 15, 15, 18, 22, 25 the mean is 17.83, the median is 16.5 and the mode is 15.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
All three describe the "middle" of a set of numbers in different ways. The mean is the arithmetic average, the median is the central value, and the mode is the most common value. They can be very different when the data is skewed.
How do you find the median of an even number of values?
Sort the numbers, then take the average of the two middle values. For 2, 4, 6, 8 the middle values are 4 and 6, so the median is 5.
Can a set of numbers have no mode or more than one?
Yes. If every number appears once there is no mode, and if two or more numbers tie for the highest count the set has several modes. The calculator lists all of them.
What is the range?
The range is the largest value minus the smallest. It is the simplest measure of spread. For 12 to 25 the range is 13.
What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?
Use population standard deviation when your numbers are the whole group you care about, and sample standard deviation when they are a sample from a larger group. The sample version divides by n − 1 instead of n, which gives a slightly larger value.
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
Use the median when a few very large or very small values would distort the average, as with incomes or house prices. The mean works well for data without extreme outliers.
