How to Use the Tip Calculator

How to calculate a tip

  1. Enter the bill. Type the amount on the check.
  2. Choose your tip. Drag the slider to the percentage you want to leave.
  3. Add the number of people. If you are splitting the check evenly, enter how many people are paying.
  4. Round if you like. Pick Round up to a whole number for an easy-to-pay total.
  5. Read your result. You will see the tip, the total and each person's share. Results update as you type.

The calculator splits the bill evenly. If people ordered very different amounts, calculate each person's meal separately.

Formula & Methodology

Tip formulas

Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100

Total = Bill + Tip

Each person pays = Total ÷ Number of people

Worked example

A dinner bill is $85 and you want to leave an 18% tip for a group of 4.

  1. Tip = 85 × 0.18 = $15.30
  2. Total = 85 + 15.30 = $100.30
  3. Each person pays = 100.30 ÷ 4 = $25.08

Quick mental math

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place left ($85 becomes $8.50).
  • 15%: take 10% and add half of it ($8.50 + $4.25 = $12.75).
  • 20%: double the 10% figure ($8.50 × 2 = $17.00).

Rounding

When you choose Round up to a whole number, the total is raised to the next whole amount and the difference is added to the tip, so the effective tip percentage ends up slightly higher than the one you picked.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal. A $60 bill with an 18% tip is 60 × 0.18 = $10.80, so the total is $70.80.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15% to 20% of the bill is a common range for table service, with 18% to 20% typical for good service. Customs differ a lot between countries, and in many places a tip is optional or already included in the bill.

Should I calculate the tip before or after tax?

Both are accepted. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, while others tip on the full total for simplicity. To tip on the pre-tax amount, enter that figure as the bill amount.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does it for you when you enter the number of people. It splits evenly, so it works best when everyone had similar orders.

What is a quick way to work out a 20% tip?

Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left, then double it. For a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80.

What is 15% of $50?

15% of $50 is $7.50. You can find it quickly by taking 10% ($5.00) and adding half of that ($2.50).

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

Not always. A service charge is added by the restaurant, often for large groups, and may or may not go to the staff. If it is already on the bill, you may not need to leave an additional tip.
