Formula & Methodology

Overtime pay formula

Overtime rate = Regular hourly rate × Overtime multiplier

Overtime hours = Total hours − Overtime threshold (never below zero)

Total pay = (Regular hours × Hourly rate) + (Overtime hours × Overtime rate)

Worked example

You earn $20 an hour, work 48 hours in a week, and overtime is time and a half after 40 hours.

  1. Overtime rate = $20 × 1.5 = $30 an hour
  2. Regular pay = 40 × $20 = $800
  3. Overtime hours = 48 − 40 = 8
  4. Overtime pay = 8 × $30 = $240
  5. Total pay = $800 + $240 = $1,040

Common overtime multipliers

| Multiplier | Name | Typical use | |---|---|---| | 1.5x | Time and a half | US federal minimum for hours over 40 a week | | 2x | Double time | Some state rules (for example long days in California), holidays or union contracts |

Overtime rules differ by country, state and employment contract, and many salaried or exempt employees are not entitled to overtime. Always check your own contract or local labor law.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate overtime pay?

Multiply your regular hourly rate by the overtime multiplier (1.5 for time and a half) to get your overtime rate, then multiply that by the number of hours above the overtime threshold. Add the result to your regular pay. At $20 an hour, 8 overtime hours at time and a half pay 8 × $30 = $240.

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means being paid 1.5 times your normal hourly rate for overtime hours. If you normally earn $20 an hour, each overtime hour pays $30.

When does overtime start in the US?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must be paid at least time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Some states add their own rules, such as daily overtime after 8 hours in California.

Is overtime calculated daily or weekly?

Federal law counts weekly hours, but some states and employers also pay overtime for long days. This calculator uses weekly totals. If your overtime is daily, add up your overtime hours first and enter the regular hours threshold that matches your contract.

What is double time?

Double time pays 2 times your regular rate. It is not required by federal law but is common in union contracts, for work on certain holidays, and in some states after very long shifts.

Does overtime count toward a salary?

Many salaried employees are exempt from overtime, but not all. Whether you qualify depends on your job duties and how much you are paid, not just on being salaried. Check with your employer or your local labor department if you are unsure.

Is overtime pay before or after tax?

The calculator shows gross pay before taxes. Overtime is taxed like the rest of your earnings, although a larger paycheck can make it look as if it is taxed at a higher rate because of how withholding is calculated.
