How to Use the Fraction Calculator
How to use the fraction calculator
- Enter the first fraction. Type the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number). If it is a mixed number such as 2 1/2, also enter the whole number part.
- Choose an operation. Pick add, subtract, multiply or divide.
- Enter the second fraction in the same way.
- Read the answer. The result is shown as a simplified fraction, a mixed number, a decimal and a percentage, with the steps underneath.
For a negative fraction, put the minus sign on the numerator (for example -3 over 4). For a negative mixed number, put it on the whole number. Denominators cannot be zero.
Formula & Methodology
Fraction formulas
Adding or subtracting: find a common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators.
a/b ± c/d = (a × d ± c × b) ÷ (b × d), then simplify.
Multiplying: multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators.
a/b × c/d = (a × c) ÷ (b × d)
Dividing: multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c = (a × d) ÷ (b × c)
Worked examples
- 1/2 + 1/3: common denominator 6, so 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
- 3/4 − 1/8: common denominator 8, so 6/8 − 1/8 = 5/8
- 2/3 × 3/5: 6/15, which simplifies to 2/5
- 1/2 ÷ 1/4: 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2
Mixed numbers
A mixed number combines a whole number and a fraction. To calculate with it, convert it to an improper fraction first: 1 1/2 = (1 × 2 + 1) ÷ 2 = 3/2. The calculator does this for you and gives the answer back as a mixed number.
Simplifying
Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For 6/15 the GCD is 3, so 6/15 = 2/5.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you add fractions?
Give both fractions the same denominator, add the numerators, and keep the denominator. For 1/2 + 1/3, the common denominator is 6, so 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
How do you subtract fractions?
Find a common denominator as for addition, then subtract the second numerator from the first. 3/4 − 1/8 becomes 6/8 − 1/8 = 5/8.
How do you multiply fractions?
Multiply the top numbers together and the bottom numbers together, then simplify. 2/3 × 3/5 = 6/15 = 2/5. You do not need a common denominator for multiplication.
How do you divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction upside down (take its reciprocal) and multiply. 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2.
How do I add mixed numbers?
Convert each mixed number to an improper fraction, add them, then convert back. 1 1/2 + 2 3/4 = 3/2 + 11/4 = 6/4 + 11/4 = 17/4 = 4 1/4. Enter the whole number and the fraction separately above and the calculator does the steps.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the numerator and the denominator by the largest number that divides both, their greatest common divisor. For 12/18 the GCD is 6, so the fraction simplifies to 2/3. The answers here are always shown in simplest form.
Can I turn the answer into a decimal or a percentage?
Yes. The result also shows the decimal value (divide the numerator by the denominator) and the percentage (the decimal multiplied by 100). 5/6 is 0.8333 or 83.33%.
