Running pace formulas
Pace = Time ÷ Distance
Time = Pace × Distance
Distance = Time ÷ Pace
Speed = Distance ÷ Time, or 3,600 ÷ pace in seconds per km for km/h.
Worked examples
- 5 km in 25:00: 1,500 seconds ÷ 5 = 300 seconds = 5:00 per km. In miles, 5:00 × 1.609 = 8:03 per mile. The speed is 3,600 ÷ 300 = 12 km/h.
- 10 km at 5:30 per km: 330 seconds × 10 = 3,300 seconds = 55:00.
- 1 hour at 5:00 per km: 3,600 ÷ 300 = 12 km.
- Marathon in 4:00:00: 14,400 seconds ÷ 42.195 km = 341 seconds = 5:41 per km, or about 9:09 per mile.
Converting pace between km and miles
Pace per mile = Pace per km × 1.609344
Pace per km = Pace per mile ÷ 1.609344
An 8:00 per mile pace is 480 ÷ 1.609344 = 298 seconds, or 4:58 per km.
Common race distances
| Race | Kilometers | Miles | |---|---|---| | 5K | 5 | 3.11 | | 10K | 10 | 6.21 | | Half marathon | 21.0975 | 13.1 | | Marathon | 42.195 | 26.2 |
How to use the running pace calculator
- Choose kilometers or miles.
- Pick what you want to find. Pace needs a distance and a time, Finish time needs a distance and a pace, and Distance needs a time and a pace.
- Choose a race distance or type your own. The presets fill in the correct distance for a 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon in your chosen unit.
- Enter your time or pace. Use hours, minutes and seconds.
- Read the results. You will see pace in both units, the finish time, the distance and your speed, plus a table of split times.
Use the split table as a pacing plan: each row shows the time you should reach at that kilometer or mile to hold an even pace.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate running pace?
Divide your total time by the distance. Running 5 km in 25 minutes is 25 ÷ 5 = 5 minutes per kilometer, or 5:00 per km. In miles, the same run is about 8:03 per mile.
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the pace per kilometer by 1.609344 to get the pace per mile. 5:00 per km becomes 300 × 1.609 = 483 seconds, which is about 8:03 per mile. To go the other way, divide by 1.609344.
What pace do I need to run a marathon in 4 hours?
About 5:41 per kilometer, which is roughly 9:09 per mile. Use the marathon preset above with a time of 4 hours to see your exact pace and a split for every kilometer or mile.
How long will it take me to run 10K?
Multiply your pace by the distance. At 5:30 per km, a 10K takes 55:00. Choose "Finish time" with the 10K preset and enter your pace to find yours.
What is a good running pace?
It depends on your age, fitness and goals. Many recreational runners run between about 5:30 and 7:30 per kilometer (roughly 9:00 to 12:00 per mile). Compare yourself with your own previous runs rather than with others.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per distance (minutes per kilometer), so a lower number is faster. Speed is distance per time (kilometers per hour), so a higher number is faster. This calculator shows both.
Should I run the same pace throughout a race?
An even pace, or a slightly faster second half, is a common strategy because starting too fast often causes a slowdown later. The split table shows the times to hit at each marker for an even pace.
