How to Use the Temperature Converter (°C, °F, K)
How to convert a temperature
- Enter the temperature. It can be negative or have decimals.
- Choose the scale it is currently in: Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin or Rankine.
- Read the results. The other three scales appear at once, with the Celsius and Fahrenheit conversion first.
Temperatures below absolute zero (−273.15 °C, −459.67 °F or 0 K) do not exist, so the calculator will tell you if a value is too low.
Formula & Methodology
Temperature conversion formulas
| Conversion | Formula | |---|---| | Celsius to Fahrenheit | °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 | | Fahrenheit to Celsius | °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 | | Celsius to Kelvin | K = °C + 273.15 | | Kelvin to Celsius | °C = K − 273.15 | | Fahrenheit to Kelvin | K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 | | Rankine to Fahrenheit | °F = °R − 459.67 |
Worked examples
- 25 °C in Fahrenheit: 25 × 9/5 + 32 = 77 °F
- 98.6 °F in Celsius: (98.6 − 32) × 5/9 = 37 °C
- 0 °C in Kelvin: 0 + 273.15 = 273.15 K
- 350 °F in Celsius: (350 − 32) × 5/9 = 176.67 °C
Handy reference points

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 (1.8) and add 32. For 25 °C, that is 25 × 1.8 + 32 = 77 °F. As a quick mental estimate, double the Celsius value and add 30.
How do you convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5/9. For 98.6 °F that is (98.6 − 32) × 5/9 = 37 °C. A rough estimate is to subtract 30 and halve the result.
What temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same?
At −40. Both −40 °C and −40 °F describe the same temperature, which you can check with either formula.
How do I convert Celsius to Kelvin?
Add 273.15 to the Celsius temperature. Water freezes at 0 °C, which is 273.15 K. A change of one degree is the same size in Celsius and Kelvin, so only the starting point differs.
What is 350 °F in Celsius?
It is 176.67 °C, which is often rounded to 175 °C in recipes. Common oven settings convert as 325 °F ≈ 163 °C, 375 °F ≈ 190 °C and 400 °F ≈ 204 °C.
What is absolute zero?
It is the lowest possible temperature, where particles have minimal motion: 0 K, −273.15 °C or −459.67 °F. Nothing can be colder, so the calculator rejects values below it.
What is the Rankine scale?
Rankine is the absolute scale that uses Fahrenheit-sized degrees, so 0 °R is absolute zero. It is used in some engineering fields in the US. Kelvin is the equivalent for Celsius-sized degrees.
